The boxes themselves aren’t that impressive, but the secret lies in their elaborate artwork. We hand-apply that artwork using metallic paint to create beautifully shimmering patterns.
Since the boxes are only flattened to the bare minimum, the surface is extremely thin and soft, which makes them difficult to handle.
To make it easier for workers, we cut out of a larger sheet using automated cutting machines. Once removed from their original paperboard backing, they are hand-folded into shape.
The paperboard backing is usually called a “liner”, but it’s not like the kind you find in cereal boxes.
Gold foil liner paperboard and other types of specialty paperboard, such as red or black fancy paperboard, can be found at our website – your direct source for wholesale paper and premium office papers.
What type of material is used?
Gold foil boxes are made of special paperboard that is embossed so the pattern isn’t flat. The boards are laminated with shiny foil on both sides and then cut out using automated machinery.
As we mentioned, once they’re separated from their liner, they’re hand-folded into shape at a packaging factory.
We don’t want them to look too perfect or flat because that would lessen the visual appeal. The artwork is only stamped on one side of the box, but it can be mirrored on the other side for a design that’s symmetrical.
What are the types of gold foil packaging?
There are several types of boxes available, which vary in size and shape.
They also differ according to the application such as whether they’re meant for cosmetics or pharmaceutical products.
FDA-approved food packaging is usually made from paperboard that has been treated with chemicals to prevent contamination and spoilage. However, since gold foil boxes aren’t used for food, they don’t need to be treated.
Are there any special features?
The boxes offer a unique and luxurious look because metallic paint and golden foil produce a shimmering effect. The style is very popular for products like luxury cosmetics and organic skincare products that demand an elegant bearing.
They can also be made with a variety of surface designs such as satin or hair-on.
What are the advantages of using the boxes for your business?
These boxes offer beauty and style, but once they’re made, they also provide the ultimate protection for your product. The reason for that lies in the fact that they’re stronger than the regular paperboard cartons and won’t crush as tissue boxes would.
If you were to put a regular paperboard box inside another cardboard box for shipping, the inner one would get crushed. Instead of being crushed, gold foil boxes are more likely to crinkle on impact, which is less damaging than crushing.
Besides, these boxes can also help product branding because they have high visual appeal and decorative value that makes them eye-catching.
How about storage? Where should it be placed?
The box isn’t meant to be opened frequently because it gives the product longer shelf life. It’s best to store at room temperature in order to avoid extreme heat, which can cause the foil-added chemicals to break down.
They should be kept in a cool dark environment. If exposed to sunlight, the gold coating may fade over time. It’s not necessary to keep them covered because the product will already be enclosed inside the box.
How much do gold foil boxes cost?
The price of a golden box varies according to size, weight, and quantity.
You can expect the cost per unit to be about $1.00 for boxes with dimensions of 4″ x 2-3/4″ x 1-5/8″. However, prices change in accordance with fluctuations in the market and you might end up paying more or less.
The size of the run will also determine the cost of production, but since these are made in small quantities, economies of scale can’t be applied to bring down prices.

Our process of making the boxes
Step 1: Your artwork is submitted for prepress checking.
Step 2: The final files are sent for printing on a digital press, which produces high-quality results.
Step 3: The stock is fed into an inline folder gluer, where it’s then folded into the proper size and shape.
Step 4: The box is scored to allow for easy folding.
Step 5: Once folded, it’s automatically inserted into a custom die-cutter to get the shape of your design.
Step 6: The box is then sent for printing with digital offset lithography.
Step 7: Gold foil hot stamping produces beautiful results!
